Students in kindergarten through Grade 12 spent a recent Saturday sharpening their strategic skills during the Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) fall chess tournament.
Held Oct. 24 at Thomas Stone High School, the tournament drew 133 students who played matches against others at or near their grade level. The tournament is held twice a year — one in fall, another in winter — and is coordinated and hosted by the CCPS office of gifted and talented education.
One champion was named per grade level who received a trophy. All other participants earned a medal. Felix Cummings served as tournament director with Roland and Maria Thorpe of the Waldorf Chess Club assisting with tournament pairings and scoring.
